After spending this past week in St. Louis and talking to several high school football coaches, one thing is certain: college coaches need to be taking a closer look at linebacker
Jason Meehan (Webster Groves, Mo./Webster Groves). All coaches in St. Louis said that Meehan is the best defensive player in the city this year. "I really don't understand what the college coaches are looking for," said Webster Groves coach Cliff Ice. "Jason has everything you want from an inside backer and it's a shame that a bad 40-yard time at a summer combine has turned everyone off to him. The big problem with all of this is that college coaches recruit off paper and combine numbers instead of talking to high school coaches, watching film and seeing what's inside of a player's heart. Jason Meehan is an FBS-level prospect."Webster Groves is 6-0 heading into District's this weekend and hasn't played a close game all year. "I have some pretty good stats for only playing one entire game this year," said the 6-foot-2, 220-pound Meehan. "I have 65 tackles, three interceptions and two sacks this season. As far as recruiting goes, I'm hearing from Wisconsin, Missouri and Illinois the most. I just sent some highlights to Nebraska, Indiana, Colorado, Oregon, Arkansas and a few other schools that I can't remember off the top of my head. Wisconsin and Illinois seem the most interested in me right now. The schools that I'm most interested in are Wisconsin, Michigan or Michigan State, Nebraska, Indiana or Arkansas."It's flattering that the coaches in St. Louis think so highly of me. I just try to play as hard as I can and I'm a team player. All I care about is that we win. When it comes down to it, I just want to get a scholarship and play college football at a high level."Webster Groves is the defending state champion in Missouri. It has a 20-game win streak heading into this weekend's big game with perennial power Chaminade and Iowa State bound tailback
Rob Standard.
Charlton's recruitment heating upThe first game of the season, I had the pleasure of watching super sophomore prospect Taco Charlton (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington). That game against Plainfield (Ind.) High School was a coming out party for him and we checked in with him to see just how much the interest in him has picked up. "It's been absolutely crazy," said the 6-7, 240-pound defensive end. "I've been down to Cincinnati for a game and Michigan State wanted me to come to a game but I wasn't able to make it. After our first game, I started to get a ton of mail. Alabama and Penn State are sending the most mail lately. I have some time to think about things but Ohio State, Michigan State, Cincinnati, Alabama, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Minnesota and I like Arizona a lot."
One to watchA prospect to watch in the Class of 2012 is wide receiver Stefan Sansone (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University High). The 6-0, 180-pounder had one of the best one-handed catches I've seen so far this year on film. "Stefan is a definite FCS-level prospect," said SLUH coach Gary Kornfeld. "I feel that Stefan can play at the MAC level and he's getting interest from some FBS level schools so we'll have to see how it all plays out." He has been getting hand-written mail from Missouri, Kansas State, Indiana, Iowa and Akron. The 6-7, 240-pounder has been to a game at Indiana and plans to go see Iowa host Ohio State on Oct. 20.
Hamilton sets up Iowa visitIowa commit
Ray Hamilton (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville) is having a very good senior season. "We're 5-2 right now," said the 6-5, 230-pound tight end. "I have 37 catches for 600 yards and I've scored six touchdowns. We have a huge game Friday against our rival (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush)."He plans to take his official visit to Iowa on Nov. 20.
