Notes from around the Midwest:• Sounds like Cal had a successful official visit weekend and now the Bears are looking even better for landing the signature of wide receiver
DeAnthony Arnett (Saginaw, Mich./Saginaw). According to Arnett's brother Ralph, DeAnthony loved everything about Cal. Arnett didn't commit, but it sounds like Cal will be there when the dust settles on national signing day.•
Adam Pittser (Richmond, Ill./Richmond-Burton) didn't make his official visit this weekend at Washington. Pittser said he was called by the Huskies coaching staff early last week and was asked to put his visit on hold until after the season. Call it coincidence, but Washington received a commitment from California quarterback
Joseph Gray (Los Angeles/Dorsey) last week. Pittser said he is still holding out hope that Wisconsin is going to offer him a scholarship. The Badgers have been up front with Pittser telling him that they are waiting on the decision of QB
Jacoby Brissett (West Palm Beach/Dwyer). Brissett will take an official visit to Wisconsin for Saturday's game against No. 1 Ohio State. Pittser says he'll be at that game as well.• St. Louis is always one of my favorite cities to visit in the Midwest. I visited five schools in the area yesterday and ran across some interesting players, including
Matt Killian (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) and teammate Jake Lasater. Both are offensive tackles in the 6-6, 300-pound range. Killian has a couple of MAC offers and Lasater was just offered a scholarship by Tulane.• Just down the road at Francis Howell Central are a couple of super sophomore prospects in Joe McDevitt and Derrick Puni. McDevitt is a defensive end/offensive lineman, while Puni is a defensive end/tight end. McDevitt's father played college football at Missouri, while Puni's father played D-II football. • DeSmet Jesuit is one of the top prep programs in the Midwest and it's always nice to check in and talk with coach Pat Mahoney. The Spartans have perhaps one of the nation's top junior wide receiver prospects in
Durron Neal. Neal he grew up a fan of Alabama and his dad is a fan of USC. Neal has 18 scholarship offers right now, but the Crimson Tide and Trojans haven't offered yet.• Schools still looking to fill out their 2011 class might look at DeSmet's Steven Pace. He's having a great year and Mahoney says that the FCS level schools are all over Pace, but feels he could play at the MAC level. Pace is 6-2, 195 pounds and solid. I see him adding 20-pounds moving forward and developing into an outside linebacker at the next level.• Also watch Pace's teammate Teddy Colvin. What's not to like about a 6-4, 235-pound defensive end/tight end? Some see Colvin as a defensive end but I see him playing tight end in the right situation. Colvin is a versatile athlete with a tremendous frame and athletic ability.
