Mark Scarpinato (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette University) was one of the top prospects that attended the Chicago Under Armour combine last month and at that time, the 6-foot-2, 260-pound defensive tackle was still weighing his college options. On Monday, Scarpinato ended his recruitment. "My mom and I drove to East Lansing on Sunday night," Scarpinato said. "On Monday, we were given a campus tour. I had been to Michigan State several times but this was the first for my mom and I needed her to feel comfortable with the place that I was going to be spending the next four-to-five years of my life. Michigan State passed with flying colors with my mom and then we sat down with coach [Mark] Dantonio around noon on Monday and I told him I wanted to be a Spartan. Coach Dantonio told me that he wanted to make sure I was serious and I ensured him that I was. All the coaches were excited. Coach [Ted] Gill, the defensive line coach, told me that I made his day. It feels great to be a Spartan. Michigan State is the right place for me and now I can concentrate on playing my senior season. It would be nice to see my future teammate Trae Wanes in the state championship game this year."• Linebacker
Kendall Walker (Cincinnati/Moeller) says he has some scholarship offers in hand and several other schools have been in contact. "I have offers from Buffalo, Indiana and Air Force," said the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder. "I'm keeping my options open right now. I have visited both Northwestern and Kentucky this summer and I don't plan on making any kind of decision until the fall or after my season. I'm hoping to impress the college coaches with my senior film and turn that into a few more scholarship offers." Walker had 90 tackles, seven tackles for loss and two forced fumbles as a junior.• Guard
Luke Luhrsen (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) wasn't one of the most talked about prospects during the spring evaluation period, but he didn't let that get him down. Luhrsen hit the camp circuit and the offers started to roll in. "I camped with Bowling Green, Indiana, Illinois, Northwestern, Louisville Kansas," said the 6-foot-5, 275-pounder. "Louisville and Kansas offered me a scholarship and I decided to give Kansas my verbal commitment. I committed to Kansas because I felt it was the best fit for me as far as school atmosphere, academics and football. Coach [Chuck] Long is recruiting me from Kansas and he's an Illinois guy so there was a lot of common ground there."
