After the playoffs started a lot of people asked me why some NBA players seem to dog it down the stretch of the regular season. My answer: It depends. Some guys just simply don't care enough to play hard when their team is out of the playoff race. They're busy thinking about where to go on vacation. Then there are the guys who simply won't put out the effort unless they're playing on national television. For teams in small markets, playing in front of a national audience is a huge deal. To be honest, TV is the biggest motivator there is in the NBA. You may find a guy so embarrassed about his team's record that he goes into hiding at season's end, but you rarely find a guy who won't turn it on when the TV lights come on. Coach can scream all he wants, but only the camera can really get a guy going.
