Carson Wentz begins offseason training; mechanics instructor up next

PHILADELPHIA -- Carson Wentz is back to work.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback spent Friday working out with a pair of 2017 NFL Draft prospects, wide receivers Cooper Kupp of Eastern Washington and Chad Hansen from Cal, at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in California.

From here, he'll head to the Irvine area to train with motion mechanics instructor Adam Dedeaux. A colleague of well-known QB instructor Tom House, Dedeaux has worked with Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Tim Tebow, among others. Wentz indicated at the end of the season that he would likely spend part of his offseason with a quarterback guru.

As Ron Jaworski laid out, there are a few mechanical issues that Wentz needs to clean up. Specifically, Jaworski points to the fact that Wentz tends to "drop the ball" toward his lower body after taking the snap, as opposed to immediately bringing it up high into a throwing position, which extends his release time.

"He's got to quicken up his stroke," he said. "He has a tendency to drop the ball, and that will have to be changed in the offseason."

This training session with Dedeaux begins Monday and will last one week.

It is likely to be a jam-packed offseason from here on out for Wentz. Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews said he wants to rent a cabin with Wentz in North Dakota so they can throw and bond. Matthews, Wentz and tight end Zach Ertz are part of a core that plan on spending a lot of time in the Philadelphia area so they can continue to fine-tune their chemistry.

Wentz is also expected to take part in more workouts with Kupp and Hansen, who share the same agency as Wentz: Rep 1 Sports. Kupp, a potential second-round pick, showed up to the Senior Bowl wearing one of Wentz's "AO1" shirts. Hansen could be a Day 2 pick.
