NEW ORLEANS, LA -- Word has it down in New Orleans that a young bay filly will make her first start at Fair Grounds Race Course this Sunday.
"She's just Blame's full sister, that's all she is," trainer Al Stall Jr. said Wednesday morning as he watched his horses go through their paces from the rail near Barn 10. "Personality-wise, she couldn't be more different."
The runner in question is Might, a 3-year-old daughter of Arch out of stakes contender Liable. Last November, her big brother beat 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta in the Breeders' Cup Classic and took home Champion Older Male honors for an outstanding 4-year-old season. Those are some big hoofprints to follow, but this bay miss has a mind of her own.
"She's a little more on-edge, not as laid back as Blame was," Stall said. "You bring her out here next to the pony and her ears go back
she's showing more signs of speed-like tendencies in the morning as well. She's been coming along nicely."
Another highly-anticipated first-time starter from the Stall barn is Bind, a 3-year-old son of Pulpit out of the Unbridled mare Check. Racing fans have been waiting to see if the strapping colt is as talented as he is good-looking, and in the third race on Saturday they'll finally find out.
Both runners, of course, come to Stall by way of the auspicious Claiborne Farm and Adele Dilschneider, whose success at breeding is second only to her success at creating monosyllabic racehorse names that are as pleasant to the ear as they are ingenious. Like that of maiden winner Left, another 3-year-old son of Arch out of the Pulpit mare Leave, who made his debut quite nicely here Jan. 29 on the Turf when winning by a length under jockey Jesse Campbell. He's also one to keep an eye on down the road.
Speaking of Campbell, the Chicagoland native will be back in the saddle aboard Apart in the $125,000 Mineshaft Handicap this Saturday. Stall's 4-year-old graded stakes contender comes off a late-closing runner-up finish to Recapturetheglory in the Jan. 22 Louisiana Handicap for his second start of the season. The 1 1/16-mile event includes the likes of Demarcation, Mission Impazible, Fast Alex, Le Grand Cru, Z Humor, and Midnight Mischief. It's a Grade 3 event, one the winner of last year's Super Derby should be able to claim for his own.
"He's obviously a graded stakes player, but whether he's a Grade 3, Grade 2, or Grade 1 player is hard to say," Stall remarked. "In his last race, maybe he was a little bit rusty because I backed off of him quite a bit between the (Nov. 26) Clark Handicap to there. It's only February so he's not full-steam ahead just yet. It'll be interesting to see how he runs for Jesse; he's had him in the bridle and close to the pace the only two times he's ever ridden him. He should be a little more cranked up for this one."
Will he win?
Just might.
