SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- I tracked Antitrust on a drizzly morning at Churchill Downs, a few days before the 2009 Kentucky Derby. A well-known bloodstock agent was checking the horse for a client. I was interviewing the agent for an upcoming article. We watched him work, dark bay runner glinting by along down on the rail. We watched him cool out, wide-open nostrils slowly closing back to normal. We watched him jog, back and forth on the backstretch asphalt. We felt his legs. Checked his stifles. Eyed his withers. And turned him down. Well, the agent turned him down, or, more specifically, the owner turned him down, after a vet check revealed a little smidge of something that could turn into an issue, maybe not. Not worth the risk, they decided, went shopping elsewhere. This afternoon in the fourth at Saratoga, Antitrust ran 'em down. The 3-year-old son of Tale of the Cat found his best stride late, came rolling up the outside in the final twenty yards. Seven furlongs in 1:22.57. Trainer Ian Wilkes' magic was at work again. It's a busy weekend (and start of the week) for Wilkes. He had Warrior's Reward, second in the Jim Dandy, and will run Miss Isella in Sunday's Go For Wand, Capt. Candyman Can in the Amsterdam on Monday. We'll catch up with him tomorrow, feature story to come. In happenings of the day, Forever Together took the $500,000 Diana (gr. I) and Kensei won the $500,000 Jim Dandy (gr. II) for trainer Steve Asmussen. Moments earlier, the Asmussen-trained Soul Warrior upset in the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. II), Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird getting up to show behind Big Drama. Soul Warrior was ridden by local jock Dale Beckner, since the previously-assigned Miguel Mena missed his flight from Saratoga and all of his races at Mountaineer for the day. Three wins, a second, and a third from six mounts went to other jockeys, which is unfortunate considering the kid's recent success here in the Sanford on Thursday. Hopefully this latest slipup won't shut down his chances of riding here for the entire season. Sighted at the track this afternoon, Governor Patterson, who stopped by to enjoy a race or two and hobnob with track Prez Charlie Hayward. Appropriately, Luv Gov ran in the fifth race (he finished ninth), even though the New York politician who took over for Elliott Spitzer had left by then. Highly amusing to scoot past eagle-eyed security guards using the Press box catwalk as a viewing stand. That's about it for now: just another day at the office. There's nowhere else I'd rather be.
