SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- It's what we look for, admire, in a Thoroughbred. Heart. Guts. Game.
Only some horses have it. Most keep talent measured, give you what they have until another blows on by, then they're done. But one that fights back, lays it out on the line, keeps on coming with grim resolve, grabs us. That's a racehorse, we say. Inspiring.
Be Fair showed it yesterday, splashing home a winner in the Lake George. Sure, it was supposed to be a turf race. Yeah, it scratched down to four entries when they pulled it off the grass. Thanks, D. Wayne Lukas, for giving the daughter of Exchange Rate a solid chance at proving her merit in a grade II event when she's been tackling the grade I runners all season. It's about time.
"I tried her a couple times and I mismanaged her putting her in the Prioress and the Acorn and stuff," Lukas admitted. "She's not a sprinter as the jock just said, she's got a beautiful cruising speed and if she gets into it, she's pretty effective. I told him at some point you're going to have to give her a little breath of air. I said just let her get a deep breath and then come again, and I think when that horse (Mary's Follies) ran to him, he just let her have that air and then, boom, there she came again."
And that's what we love. Because somewhere in the thick of it, we draw inspiration from a runner who can battle back, a runner that shows the determination we love. Two turns may be a little more her style, and now the trainer has it figured out. We'll be watching Be Fair for the rest of the season.
We'll be remembering her Lake George stretch run for a long while to come.
