• Longshots

Longshots aren't supposed to win. But they do. That's the beauty of the racetrack. A trainer picks his spots judiciously. Then races come up deep. Sometimes, there's nothing to do but saddle that starter and cross your fingers. And when the horse you figured would be four, five back heading into the final turn is second, moving up into the lead, that's the best part of the game. A horseplayer likes to go after value. Sometimes, in search of that value, you have to take a plunge. And when that plunge proves worthwhile as a hefty payoff lights up the toteboard, that's the thrill of the gamble. Today in the second, Grand Rapport rolled home for trainer Gary Contessa under jockey Richard Migliore. 14-1 shot, $31 payback. Contessa is New York's leading trainer, but his Saratoga season has been pretty average. From 63 starts 66 at the end of today he's saddled just seven winners. Of course, seven winners in Saratoga are like 27 winners anywhere else. And this 2-year-old first time starter will go off at lower odds next time out. He looks like a real runner. It's what horse racing is all about. The higher the risk, the higher the reward. So go ahead. Take a shot. You just might end up a winner.
