SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- We've hit the mid-meet stagger. Summer, muggy haze. The rush of days blending together in a blur of morning works, afternoon races, and evening sales. For Turf writers, it's a constant grind. But through the swirl of it all, Saratoga's comfortable consistencies remain. Deep fields every day, solid runners from the key players we've come to know. Gates open at 11 a.m., first post at 1 p.m. Every day, you walk in to a crowded track full of racing fans. The people set up their blankets and lawn chairs in the picnic areas and settle down. Some of them snap pictures of the horses and lean over the fence. Others grab a beer and handicap the Form. Either way, they're enthralled by -- and a part of -- our world. It is not perfect, nor will it ever be. But walking through the paddock, we can't help but feel a sense of well-being. These are our people, the fans we work to inform and educate. They are here, as we are, because something in this sport still manages to pull us all in. At Saratoga, it's easy to see why.
