SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- They line the stage from left to right, weathered horsemen whose cumulative accomplishments account for decades of the game's best runners, best moments, best memories. At the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's 2009 induction ceremony, greatness stands before us.
These are our legends, the figures we know and love -- from trainer Nick Zito to jockey Jose Santos. For each, we remember defining career moments. But the moments outside of the public eye are just as treasured, often more.
The sight of Allen Jerkens crossing the backside on a misty morning, straw fedora and worn English saddle, swaybacked old stable pony, been doing this forever.
Pre-Travers interviews with Carl Nafzger, strolling back to the little barn in Clare Court to admire a red and white blanket of flowers the next day, basking in the glow of victory.
Angel Cordero Jr. on the horsepath to the main track, assisting the security guards with their task of clearing the roadway: "Horse coming through! And he's a good one!"
Kent Desormeaux in the jockeys' room, beaded sweat on his face, pulling off the silks of yet another winner, taking time to greet a friend -- "How ya doin? I'm hot!"
Nick Zito commenting on Commentator on a park bench in the shade of the trees beside his Saratoga barn -- as he always says, right or wrong?
And today, another one added to the books; Bill Mott's runners sailing for home, a firm handshake and a big smile (Now that's what I'm talkin' about!) before the trainer's Courageous Cat takes the Hall of Fame Stakes for the sixth time:
"I always try to do it, if I can, It's special. These people get inducted and it's kind of a little club and a very special one. You're in there with your peers and it's nice to be associated with these people and recognized by them when you have the chance."
