CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Sorry, Tony.
Not that two-time Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart had his back waxed during his SIRIUS radio show on Monday night. As painful as that had to be it helped raise a lot of money for the Victory Junction Camp and will provide a much better visual for anybody that sees him shirtless in the near future.
No, this apology is for mistakenly blaming spotter Mark Robertson for cursing Kevin Harvick after that most unfortunate run-in in the final laps of Sunday's Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Let's rewind. Stewart was running second on lap 498 of what was scheduled to be a 500-lap event when Harvick got into the side of his car and spun him out.
Stewart then yelled over his in-car radio, "What the f--- did he do that for?" Another voice immediately chimed in, "F------ jerk, that's why he did it."
Because of comments Harvick later made it mistakenly was construed that the response came from the spotter. It actually came from Stewart's crew chief, Greg Zipadelli.
Harvick, by the postrace press conference, had gotten information that Stewart's spotter wanted to "whip his ass."
Let's rewind. After the incident, Harvick sent his spotter to apologize to Stewart's. According to Robertson, Harvick's spotter approached him with a small grin on his face and said his driver "didn't mean it."
Robertson, who never spoke on the radio, then muttered, "I ought to whip his ass. That was uncalled for."
Harvick apparently thought that comment, as well as the one on the radio that was mistakenly credited to Robertson, was uncalled for.
"If his spotter wants to have a bad attitude about it, then we can all come down here and we'll handle it," Harvick said after the race. "Nobody is going to have a good attitude about getting wrecked. I understand that from Tony's standpoint. But his spotter was out of line and I didn't appreciate it."
OK, that's how it happened. One of the dangers of monitoring conversations on scanners is that you're not always 100 percent sure who is talking. It's common practice not to use the information unless you're sure who said it. In this case, I thought I was sure.
Sorry, Tony.
Again, not for getting your back waxed.
Let's rewind. Stewart, after some teasing last season from Harvick about his hairy torso, pledged to have his back waxed if Harvick was able to raise $100,000 for the Victory Junction Camp for chronically ill children.
A recent donation of $15,000 from Joe Gibbs Racing president J.D. Gibbs and a $10,000 donation from Jimmie Johnson shot the amount past $125,000.
So Stewart kept his end of the deal on Monday night with Harvick and show co-host Matt Yocum giving rip-by-rip commentary. [Note: Yes, Harvick and Stewart have put the racing incident behind them.]
Asked if the procedure was worse than hitting the wall at Las Vegas Motor Speedway a few weeks earlier, Stewart laughed and said, "Yeah, it does actually. It just isn't lasting as long."
Sorry for that, too, Tony.
