It's one of my favorite reality TV shows: the WNBA draft.
What fun it is, seeing these amazing student-athletes all dressed in their Sunday best, as if on a job interview. Actually, they are getting ready for their first day of work -- as a professional athlete.
For likely the first time in these young women's lives, they are not the ones making the call. Four years or so ago, they had the opportunity to select the school where they would compete. And from day one of their basketball lives they've been told to "take control" -- of the ball, of the game. But today they'll have to sit and wait and maybe wait some more until their names are called and they come up to the podium. It's not up to them.
These young women will wait nervously with their family members and college coaches, anxious to hear where they'll be playing -- and living -- next. Someone once told me that "every promotion is a demotion," meaning that when you go to the next level, you have to prove yourself all over again. The competition will be fierce. No resting on your NCAA laurels. You'll be the new kid in town and fighting for a roster position in the WNBA.
So this draft will be more than Moore. No mystery that Maya will be the No. 1 pick, the surest bet you could ever play. What happens next will be a function of player skills and/or team needs. Dueling Danielles (Adams or D-Rob) -- where will they go? The Stanford standouts? Remains to be seen. And let's not forget that we're sure to witness the usual surprise trades and deals that keep everyone alert -- yours truly included!
Oh, and did I mention the cohort of foreign players in the mix? Their names -- and please let me not mess up pronunciations! -- always add intrigue. Basketball is such a global force and why the WNBA showcases the world's best female cagers.
D-Day is drama, and I can't wait to see how it unfolds!
