• Jose Canseco's traveling circus hits Yuma

Look out Yuma, Arizona. The Jose Canseco traveling circus is coming to town.

He's not filming another reality show, boxing for cash or promoting any of his tell-all books, which have been his claim to fame of late. He's coming back to baseball as the manager of the Yuma Scorpions of the independent North American League. The team announced Monday that Canseco also will play for the team, along with his twin brother Ozzie, who also will serve as bench coach.

"I think it's exciting for Yuma," North American League president Kevin Outcalt said, according to the Yuma Sun. "It's going to be a lot of fun. Jose is a very accomplished player, he has a lot of sway in the media and in pop culture, and he's bringing that to the city. It will be a good team and a fun time at Desert Sun Stadium for the fans."

In other words, "Cha-ching!" Bill Veeck himself would be proud of this publicity stunt. The Scorpions' attendance has dropped over the past three seasons, and the team's future in Yuma has been in doubt. This is nothing more than a ploy to bring attention to the team and get people talking. And I don't blame the team or Canseco for going along with it.

Sure, we've almost forgotten how good Canseco was on the field, when he was the first player to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases in a season in 1988. Steroid-fueled or otherwise, the man could play baseball. He was the American League MVP and helped Oakland to a World Series title in 1989.

Unfortunately, his recent years after baseball have been filled with boorish and embarrassing stunts from appearing on "The Surreal Life" to engaging in celebrity boxing matches. This led to another scandal and a lawsuit after he reportedly sent his twin brother in his stead to a match last month. Canseco also has been at the forefront of baseball's PED scandal, openly admitting to using steroids and revealing rampant use in the major leagues in two tell-all books.

But if the Yuma Scorpions want to hire Jose Canseco to manage the team and play for them, why should he say no? The other nonsense (the boxing matches, reality shows, etc.) is on him, but this latest gig represents a symbiotic relationship. The team needs publicity and a boost. Canseco is only too happy to provide it for them in exchange for a paycheck.

We may all laugh at Canseco for making a mockery of his career. But this time at least he's laughing all the way to the bank.
