Four-star DT Jordan Watkins (College Park, Ga./Woodward Academy) committed to Stanford over in-state Georgia on Tuesday at his high school. The Cardinal had to play catch up against the Dawgs -- which was the first program he visited -- to land Watkins, but everything changed once he visited Palo Alto."All along everyone had told me how nice Stanford was," Watkins said. "When I visited there this summer it really blew me away. Coach (David) Shaw followed me and my family around and really made sure to show me everything they had to offer."After that visit, I kind of knew they were the team to beat. I felt it was just good to go ahead and get it out of the way. I called Coach Shaw to tell him and he was ecstatic. He said 'welcome to the family'. He is confident I will be accepted based on my grades."Academics are a priority for Watkins and a factor in his decision."Really, it came down to Georgia and Stanford because of the broadcasting school and academics," Watkins said. "Georgia has the Grady School and Stanford is known for their great academic program as well as their broadcast program."However, there were also other factors in Stanford's favor."Georgia's 0-2 start to the season did not necessarily affect my decision. But it did get me thinking on what might happen to (Mark) Richt this year," Watkins said. "I saw on Gameday they did a big piece on why Richt must go at the end of the year, so that could very well happen."Stanford is a program that always seems to recruit the Peach State very well. In fact, the Cardinal have signed seven recruits from Georgia over the past few seasons including one of Watkins' former teammates Henry Anderson."I still text my former teammate Henry Anderson all of the time and he tells me how much he loves it out there," Watkins said. "I also got to talk to guys like James Vaughters and Ronnie Harris, so there is a strong Georgia contingent on the team."Kipp Adams, from DawgNation, contributed to this piece.
