ESPNU 150 offensive line prospect Caleb Peterson (Auburn, Ala./Auburn) committed to Southern Mississippi on Saturday."It was a lot of things," Peterson said. "I just love the coaches. I have a great relationship with them, especially their offensive line coach (Chris Kapilovic). He recruited my brother and he has a great relationship with my entire family. He's someone that I really get along with and I can say that about the entire staff."Another big reason Peterson pledged to Southern Miss was coach Larry Fedora and the direction of the program."I had a good talk with Coach Fedora last week," Peterson said. "I asked him point blank how long he would be there and he said he has no plans on ever leaving until he gets that program to the BCS level and to a BCS bowl. That's his goal."They also have tradition and they are going to expand on their facilities. Southern Miss is going to be a good place for me. It's a good school. I also love how they are recruiting. They do a nice job and are putting together another good class."Peterson, rated the No. 4 offensive guard in the nation, will first get a chance at tackle for Southern Miss."They told me offensive tackle is my job to lose," the 6-foot-5 and 300 pound Peterson said. "If it doesn't work out I will slide inside to guard. I know one thing; I have high expectations of myself. I want to start. I do not want to redshirt. I want to get my hands on that playbook and wrap my head around it. I will work my tail off and do everything I need to do. I have a real good work ethic and I am intense, especially in the weight room. I love the game and treat it like a job."Peterson also had scholarship offers from Auburn, Alabama, Stanford, Georgia Tech, Arkansas and others."The decision was really hard because they are all great programs with all great coaches," Peterson said. "I called every one of them [Saturday] and thanked them all for their time and interest. It was an honor for me."
