Nothing like getting ahead. That's exactly what Jimbo Fisher and Florida State are doing in the recruiting wars for next season, as the Seminoles landed one of the top defensive backs from the Sunshine State in the Class of 2013 in Sojourn Shelton (Plantation, Fla./Plantation)."I live in south Florida and down there many kids dream of playing for Miami or FSU," Shelton said. "My family is divided between the two schools, but I have always been an FSU fan. So I have the opportunity to go to school there and play football and I took it."Shelton, 5-foot-9 and 155 pounds, first camped at Florida State last summer before his sophomore season. It was there he caught the attention of the Seminoles coaching staff."The coaches, players, and strength and conditioning coach are just terrific," Shelton said. "They are like a family and it's not all about football. There, boys turn into men. I just was up there again for camp and fell in love with it. I talked with some older players and I have family there. Plus, it's not too far from home. I just love the school."For Shelton it was a fairly easy decision because he knew where he wanted to go all along."I committed early because I know the process is long and everyone is nagging on you," Shelton said. "That's just the place where I want to be so why prolong it?"Shelton considers himself a guy that can blanket a receiver. He knows, though, that he's far from a finished product as a cornerback."I think I am a very good pure cover corner," Shelton said. "If anything I need to work on tackling because of my size. I can really cover, kind of like Greg Reid cover wise. I just need to become more physical."Shelton is Florida State's second commitment for their 2013 class.
