Has Alabama found its next Terrence Cody? Maybe. The Crimson Tide received a commitment fromDarren Lake (York, Ala./Sumter County). Lake, 6-foot-3 and 325 pounds, plays nose guard."I sure hope I can be the next Cody," Lake said. "I am strong. I am very strong and more of a run stopper. I am quick, too, and very deceptive with my speed and quickness on the football field."Lake says he committed to Alabama over Auburn and Tennessee."Alabama is such a good school," Lake said. "It's close to home and they have great coaches. I will become a man at Alabama."Lake is Alabama's 14th commitment.Vanderbilt raids Peach StateVanderbilt continues to be hot on the recruiting front. On Saturday the Commodores landed three-star defensive end Josh Dawson (Tucker, Ga./Tucker), one of the top linemen from the Peach State."Vandy is getting a great defensive player," Tucker head coach Franklin Stephens said. "And he's going to get so much bigger. Right now he's in the 6-4 and 220-pound range, and Josh is very skinny. He has those long arms and is so athletic. Plus, he's a great kid."The Commodores landed their second Tucker standout in Dawson. He joins Jacob Sealand. According to Stephens, he believes that played a big factor in Dawson's decision."I think that was huge for Vandy," Stephens said. "Jacob has become a good recruiter for them. Those two are teammates and good friends. Plus, I think there's an excitement in the air for Vandy and where they are going under this staff. The perception is changing."Dawson committed to Vanderbilt over Georgia, Virginia Tech, UCF and USF. Vandy now has seven commitments, six from the state of Georgia.Georgia Tech picks up two athletesGeorgia Tech landed a big commitment over the weekend with the pledge from athlete Michael Summers (Statesboro, Ga./Statesboro). Summer, 6-0 and 190 pounds, can play a variety of positions."The Yellow Jackets are getting a kid that is an athlete with multiple abilities," Statesboro head coach Steve Pennington said. "He can run, he can catch, and he can really help them out on special teams. I think he will get a great opportunity there at receiver and maybe even their A-back position. Georgia Tech is also getting a quality character kid that takes pride in his actions off the field. He has his act together and his priorities in order."Summers had scholarship offers from teams such as Florida, Vanderbilt, Pittsburgh and Duke."Georgia Tech offered late after he camped there," Pennington said. "I think the big underlying thing with him and Tech was that they were always a school and a place that was very high on his list. He has always had a great desire to go there. Who knows, maybe that's the place he always wanted to play at."The Yellow Jackets now have seven commitments. They also picked up athlete Dennis Andrews (Tallahassee, Fla./Godby).Alabama offers Auburn commitmentDefensive lineman Darius Philon (Prichard, Ala./Vigor) has been committed to the Auburn Tigers for a few weeks now. Even with his pledge to the national champs Philon still camped at Alabama over the weekend. He did well enough to earn a scholarship offer from the Crimson Tide, according to Vigor coach Kerry Stevenson."He had a great camp at Alabama, and they have offered Darius now," Stevenson said. "He really played well. But he's still committed to Auburn."Meanwhile, Vigor defensive end JaMichael Winston has scholarship offers from Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville, South Florida, Arkansas and Clemson and recently added Michigan State. He could blow up in recruiting early this fall with a good start to his senior year. Winston is coming off a year in which he missed most of the season with a shoulder injury."Teams just want to see him play this fall," Stevenson said. "You are right, he has a chance to really blow up this fall, especially if he gets off to a great start, which we all think he will."
