Red Raiders turn to debonair Kingsbury to help recruit five-star hoops prospect

Texas Tech might be playing catch up to Kentucky and Oklahoma for five-star point guard Trae Young, so when Young took his official visit to Lubbock over the weekend, the Red Raiders pulled out all the stops.

And that included football coach Kliff Kingsbury. In a three-piece suit, of course.

“It was cool,” Young told ESPN on Sunday night. “I’ve met him before, he played football at Tech when my dad was there. But he just wanted to let me know how much I was at wanted at the university.”

Young’s father, Rayford, played basketball for the Red Raiders in the late 90s and averaged 14.1 points during his career -- earning second-team All-Big 12 honors in 1999 and 2000.

The big question about Young’s conversation with Kingsbury: did the fashionable football coach try to give Young any wardrobe advice?

“No,” Young laughed. “But I did let him know what he was wearing was super fly!”
