OMAHA, Neb. -- Mother Nature really knows how to ruin a good thing.
Right when things were getting interesting between Florida and Vanderbilt -- the two favorites to win the College World Series -- a menacing group of dark clouds swarmed over the stadium, bringing all sorts of lightening and tremendously heavy winds.
Florida led 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth -- thanks to a three-run home run by Preston Tucker in the fourth -- before the game was stopped at 8:02 p.m. local time because of inclement weather.
Things got so nasty in Omaha that the press box was momentarily evacuated and fans were ushered into stairwells. After nearly three hours of torrential rainfall, the game was officially suspended. It will resume at 11 a.m. ET Tuesday.
Things weren't all bad during the delay. After trash and who knows what swirled around the stadium for about 20 minutes, the grounds crew had a choreographed fake baseball game; crew members also danced and escorted two foolish Gators fans off the field after they ran onto the field and slid on the tarp covering the infield.
But before that fun and cheesy entertainment, we had a real ballgame on our hands as the Commodores had just knocked freshman pitcher Karsten Whitson out of the game in the fifth after an RBI single from Anthony Gomez.
Lefty Steven Rodriguez replaced Whitson with two outs in the fifth and promptly struck out power hitter Aaron Westlake.
The game ended with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and Rodriguez still on the mound.
