If you get your hands on the company Learjet, here are the places you want to put into the flight plan this weekend.
1. No. 2 Virginia at No. 11 Georgia Tech
By the numbers:
UVa: 28-2, 11-1 ACC, RPI No. 3
Tech: 23-6, 11-1 ACC, RPI No. 5
Key matchup: UVa's starting rotation vs. Tech's battle axes. The reason the Cavaliers have just two losses is their insanely talented pitching staff, led by Friday guy Danny Hultzen (7-0, 1.36) and saves specialist Branden Kline (1-0, 1.08, 10 saves). As a unit, they're holding opponents to a miniscule .202 batting average. (You kiddin' me?!) But they'll have their hands full with the lethal Bees, who hit .331 as a team. Kyle Wren, Jake Davies, Matt Skole and Jacob Esch all hit better than .350. Also, that Hultzen versus Mark Pope (7-0, 0.66) showdown will be the top attraction in the country Friday night.
2. No. 7 North Carolina at No. 10 Florida State
UNC: 26-4, 10-2 ACC, RPI No. 4
FSU: 21-7, 8-4 ACC, RPI No. 10
This is one of those "puts hair on your chest" trips for the Tar Heels. Everyone was impressed by their West Coast conquest to open the season, including a win over Cal State Fullerton. But in the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately world we live in, we're looking to see whether they can handle the home environs of Florida State and the best fan base in the country, the Animals of Section B. One of the things you have to like about UNC is that most of its lineup is left-handed at the dish. That short porch in right field at Howser Stadium could get a lot of dings.
Key matchup: Scott Sitz and Gary Merians vs. Jesse Wierzbicki and Colin Moran. The Saturday and Sunday games have been a crapshoot for the Seminoles this season. In fact, they've been shut out the past two Saturdays by Maryland and Wake Forest, so beyond Friday ace Sean Gilmartin, Sitz and Merians will have to be stout this weekend. Wierzbicki (.364) and Moran (361) have ignited a Tar Heels offense that was thought to be a soft spot coming into this season. Also, watch the efficient speed of the Heels, who have been caught only 10 times in 58 steal attempts.
3. No. 6 Arizona State at No. 19 Oregon State
OSU: 20-7, 2-1 Pac-10, No. 27 RPI
With UCLA, Oregon and Washington State all hitting major skids so far this season, it appears these two teams are the class of the Pac-10 for now (heavy emphasis on the "for now" part). The Beavers will show ASU the best pitching staff it has seen this season with Sam Gaviglio, who is third in the country with a 0.39 ERA. But the Devils are blazers who stretch singles to doubles and doubles to triples. Austin Barnes hits in the .425 range, Zack MacPhee is one of the best on-base batters in the country (.510) and Johnny Reuttiger has 17 stolen bases, so there's versatility in abundance here. OSU's RPI needs the boost more here. We'll see whether the Beavers play like it matters more.
Key matchup: ASU pitchers vs. the "other eight." Oregon State's Andrew Susac, who is hitting .364, is the bellcow of the Beavers' offense, but other than him, the rest of the team is hitting more than 100 points less (.263) and really needs to amp up its game, or it could be "tap city" -- to use an Al McGuire phrase -- for the Beavers and their No. 1 seed hopes come this June. (I know, it's too early to say something like that, but you get my meaning here.)
4. No. 16 UC Irvine at No. 13 Cal State Fullerton
Watch: Sunday, 5 p.m. ET on ESPNU
UCI: 18-6, 3-0 Big West, RPI No. 44
CSF: 20-8, 3-0 Big West, RPI No. 19
With the quick rise of the Anteaters' program over the past six or seven years, these two have consistently put on one of the better pitching and defensive clinics each year. Last year's Friday lidlifter was a bottom-of-the-ninth classic that was decided by an Irvine home run from Jeff Cusick. This time around, Fullerton's mound corps has been cauldron hot and might be too much for the Anteaters' bats, even though UCI leads the Big West in hitting at .300. Also note Irvine's relatively low RPI. It certainly will go up after this weekend, but even more so with a couple of wins.
Key matchup: Noe Ramirez and Tyler Pill vs. the disciplined order of Irvine. The two Titans studs lead the Big West in strikeouts with 55 and 50 K's, respectively, and the UCI offense leads the Big West in fewest strikeouts at the plate. If the Titans' duo gets in its groove early and establishes the strike zone, the Eaters' bats could retreat to their dens. Remember, even though UCI leads the Big West in offense, its 1-through-9 scored just one run in three games at Gonzaga two weeks ago.
5. No. 24 Alabama at No. 1 Vanderbilt
Watch: Friday, 7 p.m. ET on ESPN3.com
Bama: 21-9, 7-2 SEC, RPI No. 28
Vandy: 26-3, 7-2 SEC, RPI No. 11
You've heard the old Southern saying "A come-to-Jesus meeting"? That's what we've got here. It's time for the Tide to prove to all of us that they are for real, being three games up in the SEC West and all. No doubt. No questions. No buts. Here we'll find out whether that .279 offense can dent what could be the nation's top pitching staff, which has a team ERA of 2.36. For the Tide, two of their next three weekends will be at Vandy and at Florida, so this is not a good time for a cold spell or playing with caution. Let 'er rip, Tide.
Key matchup: Nathan Kilcrease vs. Sonny Gray This is tasty stuff here, Holmes. Both of the Friday aces have been outstanding for the most part. Kilcrease has amazing control (just three walks in 23 innings of SEC play so far) and will need to keep up his habit of working into late innings. If not, it could be a long weekend for the Tide arms corps. Gray can get a little on the wild side, albeit it's the proverbial effectively wild. But you can't hassle his upper-90s heat that moves like a water bug all over the plate. Good luck with that, Bama.
6. No. 12 Fresno State at San Jose State
FSU: 20-3, 0-0 WAC, RPI No. 12
SJSU: 19-8, 0-0 WAC, RPI No. 126
How about this series as a way to dive into WAC play this year? Nice. The Bulldogs have a team ERA (2.50) that is nearly half that of the Spartans' staff (4.15). But this will be a true test for Fresno since Danny Stienstra (.398) and Zack Jones (.350) are outstanding contact hitters who put great pressure on defenses. If their hitting is contagious, it might not matter how well Bulldogs mound men Greg Gonzalez (6-0, 1.36) and Justin Haley (1-0, 1.90) are throwing. San Jose has drifted off the radar since that series win at UCLA, and this will be the best chance to make a splash nationally until late May.
7. No. 25 Rice at East Carolina
Rice: 21-11, 4-2 CUSA, RPI No. 21
ECU: 20-7, 3-3 CUSA, RPI No. 22
Despite the good RPI marks so far, both teams aren't quite up to their usual standards. Still, don't blink on this series. It'll be interesting to see how some of the Owls' youngsters such as Austin Kubitza (3-3, 1.47), Shane Hoelscher (.308) and Derek Hamilton (.304) handle the pressure of "The Jungle." The Pirates, like the Spartans above, figure this will be a great time to put their names on the headlines after dropping two of three at UAB last week. Oh, and in case you're wondering, thanks to 43 walks so far, Rice's Anthony Rendon is sporting a cool .552 on-base percentage.
8. No. 15 LSU at No. 22 Arkansas
Watch: Saturday, 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU
LSU: 20-8, 3-6 SEC, RPI No. 17
Arkansas: 19-8, 3-6 SEC, RPI No. 29
You see those SEC records for these two teams? Yep, they ain't lyin' here. This will come close to being an "elimination" series. It's early April, yes, I'm aware. But you know how rare win streaks are in the SEC, and the loser here would have to go on a wicked-big win streak in order to jump back up into division contention and No. 1 national seeding contention. So this one is big. Kudos to LSU for a big rebound win over Ole Miss last Sunday. Arkansas has lost all three SEC weekends so far. Whichever freshman class handles the pressure better here will survive and advance.
9. No. 8 Texas at Baylor
UT: 21-7, 7-2 Big 12, RPI No. 31
BU: 17-12, 4-5 Big 12, RPI No. 39
All right, it's do or die time for the Bears. I mean, this is it. Either you win here and become contenders for the Big 12 crown and edge into No. 1 regional seed territory, or you drop two or three and fall farther down the well of mediocrity. It's that simple. With road trips to Texas A&M, Nebraska and Oklahoma State in the next four weekends, this one is bigger than you think for the Green and Gold. Brooks Pinckard has been a great dual threat for BU, hitting .309 with a team-leading 26 stolen bases and going 2-1, 4.41 with three saves on the mound. He'll be a huge factor in whether Baylor can upend the weak-swinging Longhorns this weekend.
10. FIU at Troy
FIU: 18-12, 4-5 Sun Belt, RPI No. 42
Troy: 22-5, 8-1 Sun Belt, RPI No. 24
As hardscrabble as their season has been, the never-say-die Panthers actually have a pretty decent RPI and can improve their profile even more this weekend with the highly rated Men of Troy. This will be a showdown of the two best pitching staffs in the Sun Belt as the Trojans lean on aces Tyler Ray (6-0, 1.45) and Drew Hull (4-0, 1.95) and FIU counters with Kyle Fitzpatrick (3-1, 1.93), who leads the most K-happy corps in the loop (FIU has 241 strikeouts as a team). The biggest difference between these two? Troy's defense is No. 4 in the nation at .982. FIU's leaky stop troops are dead last in the Belt at .956.
