Early in the season when the Miami Heat were floundering, many followers of the team believed team president Pat Riley would make at least one trade by the Feb. 23 deadline. The biggest name in the rumor mill was Goran Dragic, but at this time, Miami's starting point guard is a lock to remain with the team, and Riley will probably run with the current roster for the duration of the 2016-17 season.

Manny Navarro of The Miami Herald writes: "It appears more and more likely ... [that] Riley will be -- pardon the pun -- standing pat at the deadline. That’s not to say Riley, 71, wouldn’t pounce on a deal to land an All-Star like Paul George or Jimmy Butler or someone that could change the face of the franchise moving forward."

Riley is expected to wait until the 2017-18 salary cap year begins on July 1 to start upgrading the roster. The Heat will gain a lot of flexibility for next season, as the remaining $52.1 million owed to Chris Bosh will come off the salary cap once the team petitions the NBA league office. Also, Riley can't deal future draft picks as most of them for the next seven years are owed to other teams or encumbered due to the collective bargaining rules.

The Heat currently have an open roster spot, so they will be looking at the waiver wire over the next 10 days to see if any of the new free agents appeal to them. If not, Riley may continue to offer 10-day contracts to D-League prospects.
