NBA Rumor Central: Extensions unlikely for Alex Len, Archie Goodwin

The Phoenix Suns have until Oct. 31 to sign center Alex Len and guard Archie Goodwin to extensions, however at this time neither player probably will receive an offer from the team. If extensions are not signed by the deadline, Len -- the No. 5 overall draft pick in 2013 -- and Goodwin will become restricted free agents on July 1, 2017.

"I think we want to see how it goes with training camp, preseason," GM Ryan McDonough told ArizonaSports.com. "I feel like those rookie extension deals get done if they’re fair for both sides. A few of them are the no-brainers; the max extensions, stuff like that. With players as young as those two guys are, there’s obviously some projection involved as well — it’s not just what they are now but what they’re going to become in the next four, five years."

The Suns can once again have a large amount of salary cap room next July to sign top free agents, so it makes a lot of sense for McDonough to hold off on the extensions, as the free-agent cap holds for Len and Goodwin will likely be less than the amount they will make under a new deal.

Len averaged 9.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 2015-16. Goodwin put up a stat line of 8.9 points, 2.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds last season.
