Friday's Magic News: PG depth a key this season

Comeback win ends Magic's shaky preseason on positive note: The Orlando Magic looked so awful during Thursday night’s first half against the New Orleans Pelicans that anyone inside Amway Center had to wonder whether the first few weeks of the regular season will be a disaster. Orlando played with no physicality on defense, no ball movement on offense and almost no spirit. But the Magic found their footing in the second half. They forced overtime and took the lead for good on a floater by Elfrid Payton with 19.4 seconds remaining in the extra period to win the game 114-111. -- Orlando Sentinel

Former Magic guard E'Twaun Moore has found a home in New Orleans: E'Twaun Moore played for three teams during his first five NBA seasons. He has a long-term home now. And he has the contract to prove it. In July, the former Orlando Magic combo guard signed a four-year deal to join the New Orleans Pelicans. -- Orlando Sentinel

PG depth key for Magic: While much has been made of the Orlando Magic’s offseason additions of defensive-minded big men Serge Ibaka and Bismack Biyombo, the team also aggressively sought and attained some much-needed experience and shooting at the point guard position back in July. Because they now have the veteran savvy, play-making abilities and shooting touch of D.J. Augustin and C.J. Watson behind starter Elfrid Payton, head coach Frank Vogel considers point guard to be a position of strength for the Magic. -- Magic.com

Magic vs. Pelicans: Postgame Report: With so much newness on their roster following a busy summer where they rebuilt the coaching staff and added talent at every position, the Orlando Magic knew there would be a difficult learning curve that they would have to battle early on. Their hope, however, was that by spending time together all throughout September, in training camp and in the seven-game preseason that they could lessen those growing pains and defy expectations. The goal, after all, was to be back in the playoffs by the spring. -- Magic.com
