Friday's Blazers Links: Team banks on future by spending big this summer

Blazers' spending spree: Team banks on future: Throughout the league, NBA teams paid out more than $3 billion in free-agent signings this summer. The average player salary will be in the vicinity of $6 million next season. Call it obscene, absurd and outrageous, but that’s the new norm in the league these days, thanks to a burgeoning national television package that helped extend the salary cap to a record $94 million. Even so, what the Trail Blazers have done this summer is unprecedented. In signing guards Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum to extensions and locking up five players with free-agent contracts, Portland committed to paying the Swingin’ Seven $500 million. That’s a half-billion dollars, folks. Why, that can buy an NHL expansion team. -- The Portland Tribune

Offseason highs and lows, Mark Mason health update, more: The Portland Trail Blazers will interrupt the NBA's August doldrums on Friday when they hold a news conference to recognize CJ McCollum's contract extension. While we wait for the 11 a.m. availability, let's take a spin around the internet to peek in on what's going on with the Blazers. -- The Oregonian
