MLB Rumor Central: Odds of a long-term deal for Oakland's Sonny Gray

Sonny Gray is open to discussing a long-term deal with the Oakland Athletics, but the front office has not responded in kind, reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Rumor Central

Gray, who is not eligible for free agency for three more years, has endured an injury-plagued season with a 5-11 record with a 5.74 ERA. But the 26-year-old right-hander remains a key piece of Oakland’s future, and the decline in production could bring down the price of a multi-year deal. Gray has been on the disabled list since Aug. 6 with a forearm strain.

While Gray may want some financial security right now, “the lack of talks to date makes that a dim prospect,” Slusser writes.

Outfielder Khris Davis, catcher Stephen Vogt and shortstop Marcus Semien are other key players under club control for a few more seasons. Slusser cautions the A’s face financial obstacles due to their uncertain stadium situation and the uncertainty of future revenue sharing, making any long-term deal difficult to complete.
