MLB Rumor Central: Delayed free agency for Shelby Miller?

The Arizona Diamondbacks may have a financial incentive to keep Shelby Miller at Triple-A Reno until this weekend.

Rumor Central

Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports the D-backs, whether intended or not, could end up with an extra year of club control over the right-hander. “Assuming he isn’t promoted to the big leagues Thursday, the most days he could accrue the rest of the season is 38. That would bring him to three years, 171 days, which would be just one short of the number needed to be credited with a full year of service,” Piecoro writes.

There has been speculation that the D-backs could be looking to promote Miller, who is scheduled to start for Reno on Thursday. Chief baseball officer Tony La Russa tells Piecoro there are multiple reasons Miller has not been recalled, including the fact that the Triple-A Aces are fighting for a playoff berth.

Miller had a dismal 7.14 ERA in 14 starts for the D-backs when he was demoted in mid-July. He has a 3.52 ERA in seven starts at Reno, but statistics in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League can be misleading.

Another year of club control would represent a silver lining for the D-backs, especially if Miller regains the form that enabled him to post a 3.02 ERA for the Atlanta Braves in 2015. Miller would currently not be eligible for free agency for two more seasons.
