Jharel Cotton could be close to a major league promotion after coming within one out of a perfect game Tuesday for the Nashville Sounds, the Triple-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics.

It was just the second outing in the Oakland organization for the 24-year-old Cotton, one of three pitchers acquired by the A's in the deadline deal that sent Josh Reddick and Rich Hill to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Cotton struck out 12 in the 3-0 win over Round Rock, falling short of perfection when Doug Bernier tripled with two outs in the ninth.

Tuesday's outing apparently did not go unnoticed by the Oakland front office. The A’s are in the process of revamping their rotation and are likely to promote Cotton “very soon,” reports Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

A native of the Virgin Islands, Cotton was a 20th-round draft pick of the Dodgers in 2012. Cotton is a combined 10-5 with a 4.33 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 24 games at Triple-A Nashville and Oklahoma City this season.
