Vikings promote Willie Beavers to active roster

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- The Minnesota Vikings added some offensive line help, bringing fourth-round pick Willie Beavers back up to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.

Beavers took the spot vacated by Adrian Peterson when the Vikings put him on injured reserve last week. The Vikings also released cornerback Julian Wilson from the practice squad, bringing back wide receiver Isaac Fruechte and tackle Sean Hickey.

After the Vikings selected Beavers out of Western Michigan, the 22-year-old struggled during training camp, and became the highest-drafted rookie released by the Vikings since Rick Spielman joined the team in 2007. The team added the powerful lineman to their practice squad, though, and though Beavers shouldn't be expected to step in and start right away, he provides some additional depth following Alex Boone's MRI on his hip.

Coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that he expected Boone would be fine after being injured Sunday, but the Vikings could use additional options in case Boone isn't able to play and Jeremiah Sirles -- who finished the game at left guard on Sunday -- starts there against the New York Giants on Monday night.

Fruechte, who made a strong impression during his second training camp with the team, had gone to the Lions' practice squad in search of a quicker opportunity to play. The University of Minnesota product is back, though, after the Lions waived him last week.
