With John Sullivan reportedly on trade block, Joe Berger could be Vikings' center

MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Vikings' center competition appears to be headed toward a resolution, and that resolution could lead to a change of scenery for center John Sullivan.

According to a league source, center Joe Berger won't play on Thursday night in the team's preseason finale with the Los Angeles Rams, after starting the third preseason game against the San Diego Chargers and playing the first half. Sullivan is on the trading block, according to USA Today. The Vikings, who acquired Nick Easton from the San Francisco 49ers in a trade last October, played the Harvard product with the second-team offense on Sunday.

Sullivan, who missed all of last season after two back surgeries, has been alternating with Berger on the first-team offensive line throughout training camp, but Berger got off to a strong start in camp and briefly shifted to guard while Brandon Fusco missed time with an injury. Once Fusco was healthy enough to play again, Berger went back to center, and got the start on Sunday while Sullivan watched in a baseball cap.

It's tough to gauge the market for Sullivan, who's 31 years old and carries a cap hit of $5.83 million this season. But the Chicago Bears are thin at center, and the Houston Texans could be shopping for one after losing rookie Nick Martin to a season-ending ankle injury over the weekend.

The 34-year-old Berger, who's in the final year of his deal, started all 16 games for the Vikings at center and had a solid season in Sullivan's absence. His cap hit is just $1.45 million for the 2016 season, and the Vikings, who currently have just $5.7 million in cap space, could see an opportunity to create some more room by making Berger the starter and moving Sullivan.

Based on what happened over the last two days, it certainly seems as though the team is headed toward making Berger the center to start 2016.
