Don't be under any pretensions: Mexican players are wanted in Europe, despite a January transfer window that would make you think otherwise.

There was a high degree of interest in some of Mexico's best young talent this winter. However, in the end, only two Mexican players have been confirmed as signing on the dotted line for European clubs.

That fact, which some believe holds up the development of the national team, reinforces the very simple bottom line that Liga MX clubs pay well and/or domestic clubs are looking for the kind of money that most clubs in crisis-ridden Europe can't afford at present.

Diego Reyes

"Doctor 13," as he is known at Club America, has led the way for the Olympic gold-medal winners this winter. Reyes is already learning Portuguese and putting in extra hours in the gym to bulk up ahead of his move to Porto in the summer. On the surface, it is very difficult to think of negatives about a transfer that will help Reyes adapt to European soccer while developing the undoubted talent that could take him to the very top of the game. The obvious comparison here is Rafa Marquez, who moved to Monaco at the same age (20) back in 1999.
