• Sparty's home away from home

DETROIT -- In case they didn't know, Connecticut's players can look toward the roof of Ford Field and see a sign that tells them they're 746 miles from home. Or the Huskies can simply look throughout the enormous "arena," where thousands of green-and-white fans are dominating the pregame festivities before tonight's national semifinal between Connecticut and Michigan State at Ford Field. The Michigan State campus in East Lansing is only 92 miles from here, and its fans are scattered across the building. Spartans fans occupy two entire seating sections behind the MSU bench, as well as blocks of seats throughout the arena. Connecticut's fans are located across from the Huskies' bench, and there doesn't appear to be more than several hundred so far. Michigan State fans outnumber their UConn counterparts by at least 250 to 1. While the Connecticut band chanted, "Let's go, Huskies!" a large chorus of boos carried across the arena about 30 minutes before tip-off. One fan who will be cheering for the Huskies is retiring Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese, who is sitting about 20 rows up near midcourt.
