DETROIT -- Three of the four coaches with teams playing in this weekend's Final Four have won national championships.
Villanova's Jay Wright hasn't won a national title, but it might be only a matter of time before he does.
Wright won his 300th game when the Wildcats upset No. 1 seed Pittsburgh 78-76 in the East Regional final in Boston. He has won 62.3 percent of his games in 15 years of Division I coaching, including a 178-90 record (66.4 percent) in eight seasons at Villanova.
"I love Jay Wright," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "He's a great guy. He's a very good coach. I think he's making an incredible impact there."
Like Izzo, Wright has strong ties to his current program. Wright worked as an assistant coach under Rollie Massimino from 1987 to '92. Izzo was an assistant under former Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote for 14 seasons before spending the past 12 seasons as the Spartans' head coach.
Wright's loyalty to Villanova is what has made it impossible for bigger programs to hire him away. Two years ago, Kentucky officials sought to hire Wright when Tubby Smith left for Minnesota. Wright turned down more money to stay at Villanova.
Wright was considered a potential candidate at Kentucky again this year -- until UK hired Memphis coach John Calipari with the richest contract in college basketball history.
"You always do," Wright said, when asked Friday whether he second-guessed himself for not taking the Kentucky job two years ago. "I heard John Calipari say if he didn't do it this time, he'd always be wondering, what if? Right after you do it, and you see what the guy signs for, you know, for a second you go, 'Wow, that will buy a lot of horses.'
"Once you get back to what you're doing with your school, honestly, I love where I am. Once I got back coaching Villanova, I just know this is why I love Villanova, working with the people there."
