• Kansas outrunning Michigan State

INDIANAPOLIS -- Stop me if you've heard this before, but a Big Ten team is being blitzed in transition. This time it's Michigan State, supposedly the one team in the league that likes to run -- but apparently doesn't like to get back on defense. Not that you can blame the Spartans; after a season of slogging it out against Wisconsin, Iowa, Northwestern and Minnesota, they're not accustomed to anyone pushing the ball up the floor and actually trying to score quickly. It's legal. The Big Ten should try it sometime. At halftime, one-third of Kansas' 36 points have come off fast breaks. That's the biggest reason why the defending national champions lead by seven. They've thrown long outlet passes repeatedly and beaten a very good defensive team downcourt. It's all reminiscent of what Davidson did at this point of last year's tournament to Wisconsin, except Kansas is driving for layups instead of spot-up 3-pointers. But the Spartans are far from beaten, whittling a 13-point deficit to a more manageable number in the final minutes of the first half. A Goran Suton jump shot barely beat the halftime buzzer and could provide a lift for the second half. Suton led the Spartans with 13 points and five rebounds. As usual, Kansas is getting it done with little man Sherron Collins (12 points, but no assists and four turnovers) and big man Cole Aldrich (10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, 2 steals). But Brady Morningstar chipped in six points and two steals to help the KU cause.
