• NCAA puts gag order on Calhoun

DETROIT -- Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun, who has been under fire since Yahoo! Sports reported last month that he and his assistant coaches broke NCAA rules while recruiting a former player, said Friday that he can't say more about the allegations because the NCAA told him to keep quiet. During a news conference at Ford Field, where the Huskies will play Michigan State in a national semifinal of the NCAA tournament, Calhoun said the NCAA told him not to respond publicly to the charges. "As far as me speaking to the things that are swirling around, I can't speak factually on any [basis] for one simple reason," Calhoun said. "The NCAA has put a gag order. While they're doing their -- not an investigation right now, but a review -- they have told us we cannot speak to the facts." Calhoun hasn't refuted that Josh Nochimson, a former UConn student manager, provided improper benefits to former Huskies recruit Nate Miles. In addition, Yahoo! Sports reported that Calhoun and his assistant coaches made 1,565 calls and text messages to Nochimson, and that the coaches also exceeded the NCAA limit in permissible contacts with Miles. "I can't speak to the facts," Calhoun said. "So please do not think my silence is because I don't want to say anything. It's because I can't say anything else. We've been put on a restraining order while the NCAA continues its review. Knowing me in the past, you know I probably would speak up, but I can't."
