Who says Penn State coach Joe Paterno can't recruit anymore? The veteran Nittany Lions boss pulled off a bit of a coup on Tuesday when defensive lineman
Anthony Zettel (West Branch, Mich./Ogemaw Heights) announced he has committed to Penn State over scholarship offers from Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa. Zettel made official visits to all four schools. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder was the top uncommitted prospect left in the state of Michigan until Tuesday night. And with the Michigan Wolverines' many needs on the defensive side of the ball, Zettel was a huge and very important target for coach Rich Rodriguez. What has to make this defeat even tougher for Rodriguez to swallow is that Zettel grew up a Michigan fan. After Zettel made an official visit to Penn State the weekend of Nov. 27, when the Nittany Lions played Michigan State, he talked about how much he enjoyed the trip and how impressed he was with virtually everything he saw in Happy Valley. At the time, he said Michigan was probably still his leader, but Penn State was close behind and perhaps ahead of Michigan State. As the recruiting process continued and Zettel made official visits to Michigan State the weekend of Dec. 3 and Michigan the weekend of Dec. 10, Zettel said all four of the schools he was considering were very close and he could not (or would not) name a leader. When Zettel announced on Tuesday night that he had picked Penn State, it gave Joe Pa arguably his biggest win on the recruiting front this year.Paterno only has eight commitments in the 2011 class, but he has a limited number of scholarships available this year. The maximum number Paterno will sign is 15.Certainly Paterno's 2011 recruiting class is not going to be one of his best. In fact Paterno is going to have to finish with a flourish just to make the top half of the Big Ten recruiting rankings on national signing day. However, at least for one night Paterno is a big winner. In addition to Zettel, Paterno's other key commitments have come from Under Armour All-American offensive lineman
Angelo Mangiro (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) who picked the Nittany Lions over scholarship offers from Ohio State, Pitt and Rutgers, and defensive end
Shawn Oakman (Lansdowne, Pa./Penn Wood).
