Peter Keating is on hiatus this week, and Matt Meyers, an associate editor at ESPN The Magazine, is here to pinch-hit.

It's hard to remember now because of their six-game lead, but back in March a lot of folks thought the Minnesota Twins were dead in the water. Why? Because Joe Nathan tore an elbow ligament, and when we learned he would miss the entire season recovering from Tommy John surgery, many people assumed the Twins would be unable to survive without their ace closer.
