When you look back at the Calder Trophy winners of the past 30 years, you won't find too many guys who won the award with teams other than the ones that originally drafted them. In fact, the past 12 Calder winners have fit that description.

Bryan Berard, who took home the rookie hardware in 1997, was the last skater to do it while playing for a club other than the one that tapped him on draft day.

The Rhode Island-born defender was selected by the Ottawa Senators with the first overall pick in 1995. Berard, however, refused to go to Ottawa, forcing a trade. After several months (in January 1996), the Senators gave in, dealing Berard to the New York Islanders.

The next season, Berard put up 48 points in 82 games to earn the Calder nod over Calgary Flames winger Jarome Iginla, who, oddly enough, originally had been drafted by the Dallas Stars.

I bring all this up because another Islanders skater, Michael Grabner, is making a strong second-half push for this season's rookie honor.
