As human beings, we'd always like to have it both ways. I know I've been guilty of that about 1,000 times. And so it is with both Penguins icon Mario Lemieux and the NHL.

On one hand, Lemieux publicly hammers the league for what he felt was a "failure" to take meaningful disciplinary action in the aftermath of the New York Islanders-Pittsburgh Penguins Friday night fight fest; yet, on the other, he hasn't been willing to speak out against some of the reckless acts that have been committed by some of his guys wearing the black and gold.

The league, meanwhile, publicly decries excessive behavior such as we witnessed on Long Island; but has no desire to remove fighting from the game.

Now, I'm not here to comment on whether Lemieux or the league is right or wrong, I just figure they can't have it both ways. Live with things as they are or do something about it. Pick one and move forward. Not so hard, eh? As much as it's in our nature, we can never really have it both ways.

1. Finally finished
I'm not surprised that Peter Forsberg decided to hang up the blades after a short, two-game comeback stint in Denver. Here's what I wrote about Forsberg's attempted comeback on Feb. 3 in response to a reader's question:

I never like to count out anyone as competitive as Forsberg, but I really see this as an uphill battle for the 37-year-old. After all, he hasn't played in the NHL since a nine-game stint (plus seven playoff games) with the Avalanche in 2007-08.
