• The Capitals could be on the verge

I don't think the NHL schedule-makers do things in alphabetical order, so it's just a coincidence that the Anaheim Ducks and Atlanta Thrashers both have played a league-high 42 games; that means the Ducks and Thrashers already are working on the second half of their seasons. Time certainly does fly.

With the other 28 clubs coming up on the halfway mark (the New York Islanders and Florida Panthers have played the fewest games, 36), I figured I'd devote the first Monday 10 of the new year to some interesting numbers -- including a few from Saturday night's Winter Classic.

Happy New Year!

1. 9:55: Sometimes, good deeds really are rewarded. Last Wednesday, during the third installment of HBO's "24-7" reality series following the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals, we watched Caps forward Eric Fehr and his wife (Rachel) deliver Christmas gifts to a needy family. On Saturday night, despite being the only Washington skater to get fewer than 10 minutes of ice time (9:55), Fehr potted a pair of goals to lead the Capitals to a 3-1 Classic victory in front a crowd of 68,111 at Heinz Field.
