A recent conversation with Syracuse commitment
Leroy Owens from Palatka (Fla.) High School enlightened me. Allow me to explain. When those in the recruiting world talk about shutting down the borders of a state, they most often are describing in-state teams no longer allowing other schools to come in and cherry-pick their best in-state talent. With recent conference expansion, however, some schools may help close borders that don't even belong to them.Take Syracuse for instance. It has a long history of recruiting solid prospects out of Florida. Does it regularly pull the elite prospects from Florida, Florida State and Miami all the way to New York? Of course not. However, prospects from Florida who are even entertaining scholarship offers from Syracuse should be overjoyed, as should 'Cuse fans, according to Owens. Why? Because prospects' families from the talent-rich state of Florida now have an easier drive to see their sons play once 'Cuse is in the ACC, especially if those prospects' families live in the northern area of the state. Road games in North Carolina and Virginia won't be nearly as challenging for prospects' families to attend as some of the Big East venues they'd be asked to travel to.No, it won't hurt the Big Three in Florida, but as for other schools trying to recruit mid-level prospects out of the Sunshine State, watch out, the competition will get tougher.
