Five things I learned this weekend: Diggs ready to trim his list
Wideout Stefon Diggs, who is No. 9 in the ESPNU 150 and the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, said he'll cut down his list of 15 schools to nine in the next couple of weeks. "I've got a top 15," said Diggs, who plays at Olney (md.) Our Lady of Good Counsel. "A lot of schools are going to fall off because they haven't shown much interest."The nine will then become five, as the four-star prospect said he plans to take all of his official visits before making his final decision.Alabama, Auburn, California, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Virginia Tech are all still in the running. Diggs, 6-foot and 185 pounds, seemed to have his top nine already decided upon but he wasn't willing to share any info after the game."Can't leak that yet," he said with a smile.Robbins is a pancake maker
High school tight ends aren't often known for their blocking. Kevin Robbins is the exception. The standout from Forestville (Md.) Bishop McNamara was responsible for at least five pancake blocks on Friday in a 29-14 loss to Bethesda (Md.) Landon in the Patriot Classic in Navy-Marine Corps Stadium. Robbins has an advantage over his high school counterparts. His father starred on the offensive line at Michigan State before being selected in the third round of the NFL draft and playing six seasons for the St. Louis Rams. Kevin Robbins Sr. took that learned expertise and used it to coach his son for five years in youth league before high school. The main directive was all about fundamentals."From a blocking perspective, he did a heckuva job," Robbins Sr. said of his son's performance on Friday. "The guy that's going to get recruited is the guy that can drive his man down the field. That's what I preach to him."The younger Robbins also plays defensive end, where most colleges are recruiting him to play. Robbins had four tackles on Friday and three quarterback pressures."Really I think that he could do both," Robbins Sr. said. "It's whatever a college sees in him."Robbins has his first scholarship offer, from Syracuse, and said he is receiving interest from Penn State, Rutgers, Michigan State and North Carolina. The Spartans have an obvious tie given his father's legacy. So does North Carolina, where Robbins' uncle played. But for now, Syracuse has made the best impression for the junior."I love the school," the 6-foot-4, 225-pounder said. "I love the coaches. I just need to plan my visit so I can see what the campus is like."With a strong junior season, Robbins figures to add many scholarship offers to the 'Cuse invite."It's coming to fruition," Robbins Sr. said. "It's definitely exciting."Syracuse likes Bishop McNamara players
Syracuse is hoping for a trio of commitments from Bishop McNamara. In addition to Robbins, they've also offered two other juniors: quarterback/safety Milan Collins and offensive tackle/defensive end Darius Commissiong. 'Cuse is the first to offer all three prospects.Collins has been receiving letters from Penn State, Oregon, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Alabama. "My main concern is staying focused for the season," Collins said. "I'm not really worried about college. My college is the Bishop McNamara Mustangs. I've just got to go out and prove that I deserve those letters and put it on myself to be a better leader."For recruiters hoping for a package deal, the recruiting process has made Collins and Commissiong better friends."It's making a better bond as teammates and as friends," the 6-3, 191-pound Collins said. "We know that we've got to be the leaders because we're the only ones with offers. In the college football world, we're the best players on our team so we've got to play like it."Commissiong, who had five tackles for a loss on Friday, agreed."Me and Milan, we're always at each others house," the 6-3, 272-pounder said. "We work out together. I consider these two [Collins and Robbins] like my brothers. We went to the [Maryland] camp and we all did what we were supposed to do, represented Bishop McNamara. The fact that Syracuse offered all three of us at the same time, that says a lot about our talent and what we can bring to our team."Collins completed 11-of-20 passes for 105 yards on Friday. What our regional recruiting writers learned this weekend
