• This one isn't Tennessee's fault

It's time for some clarification. In the wake of Green Bay Packers' Randall Cobb's unbelievable debut on Thursday night, social media was exploding with criticism of the Tennessee for its failure to offer a scholarship to the former Alcoa (Tenn.) High School prospect who starred at Kentucky. The only thing wrong with the attacks is that Tennessee did offer Cobb a scholarship. Now, I'm not defending the Vols. They totally manhandled Cobb's recruitment by offering him just weeks before national signing day when he was already committed to Kentucky. However, Tennessee was no different than many schools across the country. First, Cobb was a good, not great prospect. No one knew he would be so dominant in the SEC and perhaps now in the NFL. Second, Cobb was in Tennessee's backyard, just 20 minutes from Neyland Stadium. It's a common practice for programs to take a wait-and-see approach on local prospects in hopes of landing a higher-rated recruit elsewhere. Then, there were a couple of factors that then-Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer couldn't control. Tennessee had long run a pro-style offense. Even if it offered Cobb a chance to play quarterback -- even in a Wildcat formation -- such promises would have been hollow had Cobb, who was a very astute prospect, just looked at the Vols' history. Fulmer also couldn't control a last second coaching change when Trooper Taylor bolted Tennessee for Oklahoma State after he was passed over for Tennessee's offensive coordinator position. Any chance Tennessee had to land Cobb were gone when Taylor became a Cowboy. Cobb was openly miffed shortly after Taylor's departure.Fulmer also couldn't control Cobb's pride. Cobb was jilted when Tennessee didn't recruit him harder early like Kentucky. The Vols had an uphill battle from that point forward. Cobb had every right to be upset, but emotions in recruiting can vastly alter a prospect's decision. In the end, Cobb made the right decision and turned himself into a fantastic NFL prospect, but don't completely throw Tennessee under the bus for his recruitment. Save that criticism for how the Vols recruited Patrick Willis. They didn't even offer the Tennessee high school standout a scholarship. He's now a All-Pro for the San Francisco 49ers.
