While Justin Masterson is the more well-known pitcher the Cleveland Indians received in the deal that sent Victor Martinez to the Boston Red Sox, the pitcher with the most upside in the deal was southpaw Nick Hagadone, a supplemental first-round pick in the 2007 draft. However, there was some risk in the Indians acquiring him as he had only recently returned from Tommy John surgery.

After being limited to 45 innings last season, Hagadone was put on an innings limit of around 100 this year, with his pitch counts carefully monitored. As I'm sure you've heard before, command and control are usually the last things to return following the procedure, and that has been the case with the 24-year-old Hagadone, who walked 63 batters in 85 2/3 innings of work across two levels this season (though he did strike out 89 batters).A former college closer at the University of Washington, the Red Sox started developing him as a starter, and he also started 17 of the 29 games he appeared in this season. But the Indians moved him to the bullpen late in the year, not only to cut back his innings but also because that might be where he best fits going forward.
