Dallas Cowboys' James Hanna on reserve/PUP, to miss six games

FRISCO, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys made 13 moves Tuesday, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 75 players. Here's a closer look:

Most significant move: The Cowboys placed tight end James Hanna on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which means he will miss the first six weeks of the season. Hanna had knee surgery a few weeks ago after complaining of soreness when training camp began. Hanna is effectively the 12th starter on offense because of how much the Cowboys use two-tight-end sets. He is an underrated blocker and can be effective as a pass-catcher in a limited role.

No callback: Kellen Moore broke his fibula on Aug. 2 and was expected to miss three to four months. In a perfect world, the Cowboys would have been able to hold off on a possible roster move until after Saturday so he could be in position to return later in the season. With Tony Romo now out six to 10 weeks due to a compression fracture in his back, the Cowboys could not hold a spot for Moore, and he will spend the entire season on injured reserve. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the season ends.

Poor timing: Shaneil Jenkins signed with the Cowboys in training camp when they had a number of injuries along their defensive line, and he posted two sacks in the first two preseason games. He was on his way to earning a roster spot before a knee injury slowed him down. Had he been able to stay healthy, Jenkins (waived/injured) could have been active Week 1 against the New York Giants.

Cowboys' moves: OL Dan Buchholz (waived), CB Arjen Colquhoun (waived/injured), TE James Hanna (reserve/PUP), DT Shaneil Jenkins (waived/injured), CB Jeremiah McKinnon (waived/injured), OG Mike McQueen (waived), QB Kellen Moore (injured reserve), LB James Morris (waived/injured), LB Henoc Muamba (waived/injured), WR Richard Mullaney (waived), LB Jaylon Smith (reserve/non-football injury list), WR Rodney Smith (waived), CB Josh Thomas (injured reserve).
