• Chargers now turn their attention to Sproles

The first big running back decision by the Chargers was to release LaDainian Tomlinson, which they did on Monday. The second major decision involves halfback Darren Sproles, who also could be gone. The Chargers franchised him last season at $6.621 million. They could keep him with a restricted free-agent tender, but the price would jump to $7.2831 million if there's an uncapped year, probably too high for the team to handle. Clearly, the Chargers want Sproles back, but they now have until March 4 to reach a long-term deal. They might have to lift the restricted tender and hope they can compete in the open market to get him signed to a long-term deal. Now that the Chargers have released Tomlinson, they must decide how to re-stock the backfield. They will look at the free-agent market, trades and the draft to find answers, but they might have to totally revamp the backfield. They have Michael Bennett under contract, but there is a chance he might not make the team. LT to New Orleans? One team to watch on the Tomlinson front New Orleans. Drew Brees and Tomlinson are close friends, and Brees will probably try to convince management to find a spot for LT on the team. There might not be a spot if Reggie Bush stays -- which is expected. Also, RB Pierre Thomas is a restricted free agent, and the team will want to re-sign him as well. Coach Sean Payton can be creative with backs, but if the team is content with the current setup, there might not be a spot for Tomlinson.Bucs eyeing DT: It's pretty clear there aren't active negotiations going between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the St. Louis Rams about swapping first-round picks. However, it is clear the Bucs would like to find a way to convince St. Louis to take a quarterback in order for them to get one of the top two defensive tackles in the draft -- Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy. The Bucs desperately need a big tackle to help their defense, but Suh and McCoy could go 1-2 to the Rams and Lions. The Rams do need a quarterback if they let Marc Bulger go and don't re-sign Kyle Boller, but it might be hard for Tampa Bay to work out a trade to acquire the top pick.
