According to a source, Jets running back
Shonn Greene suffered a badly fractured rib in the AFC title game. Greene was hurt in the second half of the Colts' 30-17 victory. Greene tried to rush one time after breaking the rib, but he was prohibited from going back onto the field after that carry because the team was worried about making the injury worse, according to the source. Losing Greene took away a potent running threat who really developed during the playoffs and at the end of the regular season. The development of Greene and the possibility of getting back
Leon Washington from the injured reserve list next season could lead to the offseason release of halfback
Thomas Jones. Although he rushed for more than 1,400 yards during the regular season, Jones looked a little slower during the team's final two playoff games. A knee injury may have taken away some of his explosiveness, but age could also be creeping in. The Jets owe Jones a $3 million roster bonus in March. They may elect to release him and go with Greene and Washington next year. Washington would be a restricted free agent if there is no salary cap.
Sheppard also on shaky ground: Another Jet who could be released is cornerback
Lito Sheppard. Jets coach Rex Ryan didn't feel comfortable enough using Sheppard much in the AFC Championship Game against
Peyton Manning, opting to go with
Dwight Lowery. Sheppard came over to the Jets in a trade from the
Philadelphia Eagles last offseason.
Raiders update: Don't expect anything new to happen on the Raiders' head-coaching front this week. Tom Cable went to the Senior Bowl to look at players, while owner Al Davis tries to determine Cable's status for the 2010 season. The longer this process goes, the better it is for Cable.
