• Cable's position seemingly improving

Al Davis hasn't made a move to fire coach Tom Cable yet because he's undecided and really doesn't have a strong candidate to possibly replace Cable. Davis has checked around about different alternatives and will probably still continue to make checks. Davis is trying to decide if major changes will help or hurt the franchise. In the meantime, Cable has to sweat out his future, but he's got to be feeling a little more confident that he might stay.During the conversations Davis has had with Cable, the coach might have convinced the Raiders' owner that it shouldn't be a lock that JaMarcus Russell will be the starting quarterback in 2010. Davis, according to a source, now understands Russell needs to work harder and perform better to be given the chance to start next season. Passing on the Pro Bowl: The AFC is now down to its fourth Pro Bowl alternate at quarterback with Vince Young being selected. Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger and Carson Palmer all pulled out of the game. If Peyton Manning goes to the Super Bowl, the AFC will have to go to a fifth alternate. Manning, Matt Schaub and Young are the AFC's three quarterbacks for the Pro Bowl.Movers and shakers: One of the things to watch for with the new union of Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider is that they might be willing to make a lot of draft-day trades. Schneider has watched Ted Thompson trade down in drafts several times in Seattle and Green Bay. Carroll wants to get as many rookie starters on his roster as possible. However, such a strategy decreases the chances of getting left tackles, wide receivers, quarterbacks, cornerbacks and defensive ends who have Pro Bowl potential.
