Don't read much into the Redskins' delay in announcing a Mike Shanahan agreement. There aren't any major issues that will block the deal. He'll become their next head coach and hire his son, Kyle, as the offensive coordinator. Once Shanahan knew there wouldn't be an opening in Houston and most likely Dallas, he was able to concentrate on getting the Redskins' job, which should be announced soon.
Cowher update: Bill Cowher didn't interview Tuesday with the Bills, but the Bills still might reach out to him later this week. That won't make much of a difference because Cowher is most likely going to stay in broadcasting this year. He had serious talks with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but nothing was worked out. The Bucs weren't willing to meet Cowher's salary expectation, and there were questions about the Bucs' willingness to dole out big money for the roster, according to sources.
Family matters: Although the Bills are expected to reach out to Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh for their head coach opening, don't rule out a Schottenheimer getting involved. Although he's said he's not interested in coaching again, Marty Schottenheimer could still be a candidate, according to sources. Another candidate is Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schotteneheimer, Marty's son. Both worked with new general manager Buddy Nix in San Diego.
Arians on shaky ground: The Steelers have yet to have their organizational discussions, but offensive coordinator Bruce Arians' future with the team will be under review. Arians hasn't been fired yet, but it's possible later in the week. Quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger is tight with Arians and may try to talk management out of making a change. As for the retirement of quarterback coach Ken Anderson, that was expected. He sold his home in Pittsburgh last offseason and moved into an apartment.
