• Kubiak appears safe in Houston

Even though many are calling for the firing of Texans coach Gary Kubiak after the season, odds favor him staying. Three tough AFC South losses in the past three weeks put the Texans at 5-6 and probably on the outside looking in for the playoffs. The Texans' job would appeal to Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher, but sources in Houston indicate that owner Bob McNair wants to stand by his coach, who has made Houston competitive.Merriman likely to rest: It sure sounds as though the Chargers will rest linebacker Shawne Merriman in Week 13 against the Browns. His playing time was diminished in Week 12 against the Chiefs because of a foot injury that had him questionable until game time. Merriman needs to get healthy for key games down the stretch, particularly the ones against the Cowboys and Bengals. Figuring the Chargers could get Cleveland without him, expect Merriman to miss the game.Eagles' Wildcat a nonfactor: The Eagles used the Michael Vick version of the Wildcat twice in Week 12 against the Redskins with very little impact. The Eagles' Wildcat is evolving more into a short-yardage package, but even that isn't working well. It will be interesting to see how Andy Reid uses Vick in his return to Atlanta this Sunday.
